Wonders of the World, Komodo Island


Wonders of the World, Komodo Island - One of the 7 wonders of the world is apparently exist in Indonesia. That is the island of Komodo. Beautiful island where the dragon populations only in the World. People who are in Komodo Island  are considered as the families themselves. Although Komodo is a beast, but the local people still maintain and preserve it. Komodo Island is already well known in foreign countries, even now been formalized into a member of the New Seven Wonder of Nature. Komodo Island is located within the national park protection is handled directly by the Government.



Komodo Island is the habitat for native animals dragons (Varanus komodoensis), an ancient reptile is the largest lizard in the world. Komodo island is also the Komodo National Park which is managed by the central government, and because of that the island was accepted as a world heritage site UNESCO (United Nations Educational, Scientific, and Cultural Organization), along with the island of Rinca, Padar Island and Gili Motang.

Administratively, the island of Komodo in Nusa Tenggara Islands and in the administrative region of Komodo district, West Manggarai, East Nusa Tenggara Province. Precisely, the westernmost area of ​​East Nusa Tenggara Province and borders the province of West Nusa Tenggara.

In 2009 than 2500 dragons tail contained in the Komodo National Park, Komodo Island contributes around 1300 and the rest are on the island of Rinca and Gili Mota.


Komodo Island Name History

At that time in 1910 there was a Dutchman named this island region as the Komodo Island. This name originated when there were reports about the presence of Dutch troops an animal similar to a giant dragon on the island. Then Lieutenant Steyn van Hens Broek kill a dragon and take to the Bogor Botanical Museum and to do research. Later in 1912, Peter Ouwns, director of the Zoological Museum in Bogor published papers about dragons after receiving photos and reptile skins. In 1926 W. Douglas Burden on an expedition to the island of Komodo because these reptiles are encouraged to investigate further.

He came back with a 12 in preserved specimens and 2 live dragons tail. Until now, three of the specimens that can be W. Douglas Burden in shapes back into animals on display and stored at the American Museum of Natural History. W. Douglas Burden was the first to give the name "Komodo dragon" to the animals.
